The
United Nations World Environment Day 2005
The UN's World Environment day has been held each year in a different city
for over 30 years. Held in 2005 for the first time in the United States,
the San Francisco event was themed "Green Cities." Each day of the 5-day
event focused on a specific theme: Urban Power, Cities on the Move,
Redesigning Metropolis, Pure Elements, and Flower Power.
Perhaps the most historic legacy that San Francisco will leave for the
future of the global environment will be the Urban Environmental Accords,
a compendium of concrete and achievable goals for critical environmental
areas that was signed by the mayors of the planet’s largest and most
progressive cities.
June 2005 also marked the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations in San
Francisco. GCI is excited to be contributing to this month of global
awareness and local initiatives. For details on World Environment Day see
the official WED2005 site.
